The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens – Architecture

The architecture of The Huntington is a harmonious blend of elegance, tradition design. The centerpiece is the Beaux-Arts mansion built in 1911 for railroad magnate Henry E. Huntington and his wife Arabella. With its neoclassical columns, marble interiors, and formal symmetry, the mansion reflects the grandeur of early 20th-century American architecture inspired by European ideals.

Beyond the mansion, the Huntington’s architecture complements its diverse collections and gardens. The Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art were expanded by architect Frederick Fisher, blending modern design with classical restraint. The Lois and Robert F. Erburu Gallery seamlessly connects old and new, letting natural light flood contemporary gallery spaces.

The Chinese Garden, one of the largest outside China, features traditional Chinese pavilions, bridges, and stonework, built using ancient craftsmanship techniques. The Japanese Garden includes authentic structures like a five-tiered pagoda and moon bridge, offering tranquil beauty. The Huntington’s rose garden was built in 1908 with European design.

Each architectural element at the Huntington enhances its purpose—as a place of learning, reflection, and aesthetic enjoyment. Together, the buildings and garden structures create a timeless environment where art, nature, and history meet in graceful unity.

The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, often called The Huntington, is located in the city of San Marino, California, USA. Viet Linh has taken pictures at different times during the past three years, from 2017 to 2019, to capture the beauty of The Huntington. Please enjoy this photo collection.
